The jarring vibration stirred Wolf out of his slumber. Initially, it was just a vague disturbance to a nonsensical dream but his old combat acuity snapped into place awakening him, and he saw the cell phone on the bedside table. As he reached for it Yolanda stirred awake as well and murmured something unintelligible.
âItâs my phone,â he said, noticing the time.
Who the hell would be calling him at seven-thirty-five on a Sunday morning after his big fight?
It was an unknown cell phone number.
He contemplated the possibilities, figuring that it was probably either something really bad or really good.
âSteve?â Kaseyâs voice asked, sounding a bit tentative. âI didnât wake you up, did I?â
Resisting the temptation to reply with a smart-ass comeback, he told her no.
âWhatâs up?â he then asked.
âUm, howâd it go last night?â Her voice was sounding extra tentative, which given the often-contentious nature of their relationship, didnât surprise him. He was still trying to fathom why sheâd called him when she quickly added. âDid you win?â
âNo,â he said. âIt was a draw.â
Memories of the cage announcement came flooding back to him like the rerunning of a bad commercial: the announcer saying there was a split decision, his voice highlighting the scores, the final judgeâs being even, making the match a draw. Reno had been more disappointed than Wolf had been.
At least I didnât lose, he remembered thinking, and I was only in it for the paycheck, anyway.
From the expression on de Silvaâs face, it was hard to tell his opinion. Theyâd done the customary fighterâs embrace after the ref had pulled them both to their feet after the air-horn had blasted. Mutual respect had been achieved and Wolf recalled having nothing but respect for the tough Brazilian, who had had more on the line than he did.
âShit,â Reno said, as they made their way back to the dressing room. âYou won that one, hands down. Those damn judges must have had their heads so far up their fucking asses they needed to cut holes in their stomachs to see out of.â
Wolf reached up and clapped him on the shoulder. âSorry I let you down, coach.â
Reno was silent for the rest of the walk and virtually all Wolf was thinking about at that point was getting under a shower to wash de Silvaâs blood off of his body.
âI thought you won, too, boo,â Yolanda said as they continued toward the locker room.
âYeah, well, win, lose, or draw,â Wolf said. âI still got the same amount of money.â
Sheâd been a little bit miffed when they wouldnât let her into the locker room, but McNamara, Ms. Dolly, and Brenda quickly joined her in the hallway.
Wolf had wanted to leave right after showering and changing clothes. He felt like heâd been run over by a ten-ton truck. Mac, Ms. Dolly, and Brenda had elected to stay for the rest of the fights, with Wolfâs blessings, and he and Yolanda had taken Rideshare.com back to his apartment at the ranch even though Reno had offered to have Barbie drive them.
